Hacksaw Ridge and Fantastic Beast

Two of the recent movie I have seen in theaters are the new war movie Hacksaw Ridge and Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. Both movies were very good in different ways. Hacksaw Ridge being a historical war movie and Fantastic Beast being a fantasy, prequel of the Harry Potter franchise.  Hacksaw Ridge is a war movie about a young man, Desmond Doss, who enlist, but refuses to kill. He endures many hardships including his father, his fellow soldiers and much of the rest of the army. His father is a former soldier who lost many of his fellow soldiers. He has become a abusive alcoholic and is angry when Doss enlist in the army. His mother being religious and his father being still hurt from his own time at war, both question his motives when war has a lot of violence. He enlist to become a medic, but has many struggles before he can reach that. Many people doubt him, but he never falters on his beliefs even when things are confusing to even him. The movie is very deep and real, but

Fandoms!

Every franchise has their fandom when in comes to books and movies. From Harry Potter to Star Wars the fans are what make the movie widely known. These groups of people who defend and support their stories and characters are called Fandoms.  This word has sprung up in recent years particularly in the Twilight era. The crazed teens that read and watched the series come to life, were at war with the sides being: Team Edward and Team Jacob. A war that seemed very ridiculous to those outside the fandom. Though this franchise sprung up the word, it was not the first crazed group of supporter for a series. Harry Potter is the biggest fandom of all time, but even it has some predecessors. Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings just to name a few.  Fans in these fandoms know everything about this series to be known. That means knowing every aspect of the worlds, people, including the created creatures and races and languages like Dothraki, Klingon and Parseltongue.  Thes

Scoring Scores

The music of a movie is everything. The background music and sound coincide with every shift in tone, mood or scene. Several movies have memorable scores as in Star Wars, Star Trek, Jaws and Jurassic Park. These movies have original scores that are memorable and connect with that movie forever. Movies also can have original soundtracks with known artist to score the movie. Recent movies with great soundtracks are Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. The music in the background to a movie play a huge part in every aspect of the movie even when you do not realize it. It is the rise in sound that inflicts suspense and sudden loud instrument to frighten you in a horror movie. Scoring isn’t just music though, it is also every other sound that goes into a movie. In animated movies the clack of heels on hard wood floor, the bang of a thunderstorm all goes into scoring. Different tactics are used to make these sounds also. Beans in a bottle can be rain and banging pots togethe

The Book is Better

From the Harry Potter series to the classics like The Great Gatsby you will always find that the book is better than the movie.            This claim has proved true for majority of movie adaptions of books. They are not just better because bookworms, like me, swear by it and are attached to them, but several factors play out that make books generally better that their movie adaptions.            When one reads a book they have their own interpretation of it. This leads everyone to have their own versions of the book. Of course everyone has the same descriptions and physical expectations.            Screenwriters are not exempt from these fact and so writers write the depiction of the books that they imagined. This also includes their opinion of things that they believed should be changed.            Also these physical views characters being one of the subjects that all readers will agree on makes for a strong impact. So when these beloved characters and their jo

SAGA

Image
So tonight’s post is about a graphic novel series that is really big right now called SAGA. I started reading it about one or two years ago and I’m finally on track of release dates.                 Volume 6 was recently published and I just finished it a couple days ago and it did not disappoint.                 First off, SAGA is the story of two soldiers falling in love despite being from two different sides of a war. The war is between the planet Landfall, the people their having wings and Landfall’s moon called Wreath whose inhabitants have horns on their heads.                   Though the two soldiers are a vital part of this story and in the beginning things a centered around them, all other characters have their own story lines too. From The Will to Prince IV every character has their own story and there is now real main characters because they’re all important.                 The hype that is centered on this series has been compared to that of Star

Don't Breathe Spoiler Alert!

I went to go see Don't Breathe last night and I thought it was amazing. I don't usually like horror movies as these days they seem to contain the same jump-scare tactics. I am sad to say that usually when I go see these movies I either fall asleep or laugh throughout it. Don’t Breathe I thought was going to be the same thing, but when seeing the trailer for it I thought it would be cool to watch. I went believing that these teens were going to try and rob this poor blind man’s house and get thrown for a loop when the old man turns out to be an army veteran and kicks major butt. So I went believing that I was going root for the old man because those kids had no right to be in his house. The first thing that happened that started to push me over to the teens side is seeing Rocky’s (Jane Levy) home life and hearing of her abuse. When hearing and seeing these things you want to see her succeed in getting this money and removing her little sister from the environment. This wa

Suicide Squad: Opinion

The highlight of my summer was Suicide Squad. Now many critics believed this movie to be just another flop from DC right after Batman vs. Superman. I disagree. I feel the movie was compared entirely too much to Marvel movies. The two universes are clearly competing with DC being the underdog in media. Marvel having many years and successes under their belt gaining a far lead to DC. Though DC has made some incredible movies, mainly the Dark Knight trilogy following Batman. The two universes being the leading members of the superheroes scene are force to compete. DC’s approach to this is to make their movies parallel to their competitors which, to me is a mistake. DC in a whole, with characters and storylines, is inherently darker than Marvel. This is what I believe they should play off of. Their focus mainly being to compete with Marvel is making them lose their story behind competition flare. Their characters' stories being lost to their Marvel counterparts. It is rum

Summer Recap and What to Look Forward to. Spoilers!

As this post is on the first of September, I only think it's right that I start off with a recap. From Finding Dory to Star Trek, over all we had a pretty good summer selection. I worked for a theater for the last two summers and it was filled with awesome people and perks. One of which being getting to watch all the movies for free. This summer I returned from college and the first thing I watched was the much anticipated Captain America: Civil War. This movie, as many Marvel movies recently, was a success. The movie was more of a Avengers Civil War movie than one about Captain America. With all the Avengers in attendance, new and old, the movie was filled with nonstop action. Though I have not read the comics for this movie, I was kindly informed of the fate of Captain America. Though this a prominent part of the comics, I believe, this was sorely left out of the movie. Marvel seems to be going off the books on this one like many other movies these days. In entirety the
Hi, my name is Sinclair Portis and I am a multimedia journalism major at Troy University. I am beginning this blog to express my love for movies and books. I also would like to inform the public about the details of these entertainments for lovers like myself. I have worked at a theater near my home for a little more than a year and it enhanced my love for movies. I was better educated by the aspects of movies by some of my coworkers and also by taking a film class last year. I have always loved books of all different genres and am very passionate about them. I have recently became interest in comic books and will record my journey through getting to know all of these characters and stories through this blog also. I have special interest in DC comics with their new spark that they are trying to start in their movies. I thought I'd educate myself on the real stories of characters like Batman, Superman, the Flash and more. During this blog experience I will be giving my opinion on th
