Suicide Squad: Opinion

The highlight of my summer was Suicide Squad. Now many critics believed this movie to be just another flop from DC right after Batman vs. Superman. I disagree.

I feel the movie was compared entirely too much to Marvel movies. The two universes are clearly competing with DC being the underdog in media. Marvel having many years and successes under their belt gaining a far lead to DC. Though DC has made some incredible movies, mainly the Dark Knight trilogy following Batman.

The two universes being the leading members of the superheroes scene are force to compete. DC’s approach to this is to make their movies parallel to their competitors which, to me is a mistake. DC in a whole, with characters and storylines, is inherently darker than Marvel. This is what I believe they should play off of. Their focus mainly being to compete with Marvel is making them lose their story behind competition flare. Their characters' stories being lost to their Marvel counterparts.

It is rumored that many of the Joker’s (Jared Leto) scenes were cut due to fear of the movie being too dark. This, if you follow the storyline or have any knowledge of the Joker, is his premise. I believe this hurt the movie a lot because it took away from the plot and some of Harley Quinn’s background.

The movie in a whole was entertaining and got the story across. The characters, mainly Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), were the stars of the show and what made the movie for me. They held the movie together not only with their humor and action but with their background and emotion too.

David Ayer I believe did a good job with the new style of this movie. He brought it to life with a lot of color and gave it a comic book feel with out it being too silly. He made the movie a lot like the comics which I thought was awesome. The character are very complex though, which may have been hard to follow with so many of them. This was said to be a problem to many views and critics. This still, I believe is just the start of this style and I can’t wait to see how it works with more characters.

In the mist of all the characters I can say that the plot may have gotten lost. Many critics and viewers criticized this and believed that the movie was ruined because of it. This I can see, but I don’t believe that the entire movie was awful because of it. I believe that the movie was a character movie that was building on hopefully movies to come (Maybe a Gotham Girls movie). All in all the movie was entertaining, funny and worth the watch.
